An architect by education, Eugenio Morello is Assistant Professor in Urban Design at POLIMI since 2010. He is also research scientist at the Laboratorio di Simulazione Urbana Fausto Curti , DAStU (ex DiAP). His research interest is urban environmental quality and urban morphology. He works in particular with digital simulations and prediction models for the integration of environmental aspects and energy systems within the design of sustainable neighborhoods. He was previously a Roberto Rocca postdoctoral fellow at the Human Space Lab, POLIMI (2009) and at the SENSEable City Lab, MIT (2008). He was also adjunct professor at POLIMI since 2006, where he taught urban design. He holds a Ph.D. in environmental design and building technology from POLIMI (2006). [more]

energy conscious urban planning, 2011

2010 (since) | energy conscious urban planning
The city is intended as an ecologic and energy system. The research moves from the recognition of urban patterns as energy basins with different features. For instance, different urban forms show alternative opportunities and suggest different solutions in order to reach energy self-sufficiency. The reseach implemnts planning tools for the assessment of urban energy demand and the potential renewable energy production and of the built environment by considering the physical layout of the city.

Città Studi Campus Sostenibile is a project promoted by Politecnico di Milano and Università di Milano. The project aims at transforming the whole campus neighborhood into an urban area being exemplar in Milan with respect to life quality and environmental sustainability. The project is open to the participation and support of researchers, students and all campus citizens.

2010 | solar maps
A general understanding of the solar admittance and solar gains incident on the urban fabric is very useful to assess the potential implementation of renewable energies at the scale of the city. A complete methodology from the extraction of Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR) data to the solar irradiation analysis of urban models and the visualization of results is presented. Irradiation values are computed for facades and roofs separately.

urban morphometrics, 2010

2010 | urban morphometrics
The study investigetes and tries to quantify morphological properties of the urban form. In particular, several properties related to shape and functions (accessibility and land uses) of a series of urban blocks in different cities are explored and compared.
